Patience is a Virtue

Sunday's Arkansas Gazette features the profile of amazing Arkansans. Every week I look forward to reading about the lives of individuals who have made a difference in our world. A couple of weeks ago, they profiled Robert Smith Treuer, undoubtedly one of the most patient humans on the planet. Twenty years he waited for giant Redwoods on the Pacific coast to mature for the specific purpose of making tables for his castle near Eureka Springs. On the side of a mountain he built his vision...Castle Rogue's Manor after coming to Arkansas in 1993.

His restaurant Rogue's Manor at Eureka Springs offers prestigious fine dining. Treuer says the restaurant is his night job, but his day job is the castle with much left to be done.

(original painting by Larry Mansker of Rogues Manor)

Castle Rogue's Manor sits regally on the cliffs above the White River on Tablerock Lake near the northwest Arkansas village of Eureka Springs. Presenting unparalleled scenic views, the Castle offers romantic lodging or an ideal event location like none other in the region.

A look into Treuer's formative years can be found in
The Tree Farm: Replanting a Life, written by his father Robert Treuer. It tells the story of how he quit his job as a union official in Milwaukee and moved his family to an abandoned farmhouse on 200 acres near Bemidji, Minnesota, a place that averages 41 inches of snow per year with wintertime lows of -11 degrees.
I would say he inherited his Father's love of adventure!

  1. It definitely looks like something out of a fairy tale, and I think amazing describes the castle well.

I would love to have dinner in that beautiful room. I'm sure it would be a heavenly, amazing, experience.

Mr. Treuer I'm sure is an amazing human being. I hope to meet him someday as a guest at his castle.

Joycee, Another fabulous story from you.

  2. His father must have been nuts to relocate to Bemidji (my folks still reside in Bigfork Mn).. but then again, that wild outdoor life does attract attention.

But look at Castle Rogue's Manor.. yes I could spend a week there and still feel like I needed more.

Thanks for the great story and information..

    with love,
    Olivia
