Percolator Punch

Here I set with my cup of coffee and in the distance, I can hear the school bus. The bus struggles to make the steep grade up our mountain, we are between a "hill and a holler" so it kind of echos back. Peaceful.

Mornings when I was a kid were comforting too. Mom would have the radio tuned to KWTO's Bill Ring show and they would play "Oh What a Beautiful Morning." The kitchen would be warm and the smell of fresh perked coffee filled the air. Remember before Mr. Coffee when our Mom's actually perked a pot on the stove?

I started drinking coffee when I was 12 I think. My Grandma Risley would give me a sip of hers when we would visit. She'd say, "Let me fix you a cup of your own" and she'd doctor it up with a splash of cream and a spoonful of sugar. I loved it and I still do. Mine is brewed in a pot that grinds the beans on one side and brews on the other. I love the whirrr of the blades that turn on at 5AM. It's the only reason I can make myself get out of bed and face the day!

A couple of years ago, I found an old electric percolator at a local flea market. There it set, the gleeming chrome made it look brand spankin' new! They had a little kitchen table set with Harvest Gold Corelle dishes that transported me back to my childhood, to that house on Summit Street. I brought that shiny percolator home and made this...

Percolator Punch
9 cups apple cider
1/2 cup cinnamon red hot candies

Pour apple cider into percolator, place candies in percolator basket. Cover and begin the perking cycle. When the cycle is complete, remove the basket and leave punch in the pot to keep warm.

  1. I use an old percolator everyday and love it. When I see one like you described, I pick it up. After my family tasted the coffee I made from it, they put in orders to pick up one for all of their homes.

    I am enjoying your blog!

  3. That coffee pot on the right of the stove is just like what we have in our little Casita Camper!
With help from Inernation coffee creamers it's almost as good as my capuccino machine.
    Have a great day!

  4. I am so going to try that recipe! I have a percolator but it is one that sits on my wood stove and used in the cold months. We grind our own coffee beans but use one of the new fangled coffee makers during the summer. So glad I found your blog!

  5. I remember waking up to the smell of breakfast and Lulu Belle and Scotty on the radio....before your time.

We also listened to Bill Ring and Mom had a recipe for Bill Ring peach cobbler she made.

    Those are good memories.

  7. Yup! We have that same percolator, it was DH's parents and we got it. But it's in the cabinet. Since DH started drinking less coffee, he's been using a coffee press.

I have never been able to get over the bitterness of coffee. Even when it's basically a cup of milk and a dash of coffee. I'm an avid tea drinker though!

  10. I LOVE Candied Cider, though I've never made it in a Percolator. That said, I don't like hot drinks so I pour mine over ice!
