Friday the 13th

It's going to be rough, Friday I'll turn the BIG 6-0! I can't hide from this one or make it seem less than what it really is... I'm officially now a senior citizen! I can get discount coffee at McDonald's, the bank gives me free checks and if I happen to run into a gentleman at Walmart he lets me go ahead of him in line... because I'm an elder!

I wish I could say I didn't look my age, but I do. I can say most days I don't feel my age... but even that is catching up with me. I've felt pretty good about being my 50's, somehow I didn't feel old or young, but 60 is different. If a Genie appeared and suddenly I had a wish to be granted, I probably would ask him to take away a few pounds rather than the wrinkles though! My friends, for the most part look about like I do. We've all aged in different ways, some of us have less wrinkles, or more fat or vice versa. The ratio of gray hair seems to be favoring choosing to color. That is going to change for me this year when I go over to the other side. I say that, but I may chicken out when it comes time to color again! It's only natural to do a little comparing, I want to look as good as I can, as long as I can.

If you look at stars, they definitely have an advantage. Even if they haven't "tweaked" their assets, they have more vacation time and that has to account for the way they look. I Googled "Actresses-over 60," the ones that seem to not have aged a day through the years. After a little research, I can see they have aged... I feel better!
Sally Field will forever be Gidget to me. Even at 66 (she was born in 1946) she still looks great. Little known facts... she was voted "Class Clown," she was on The Dating Game twice and she said the doctor who delivered her said, "Congratulations, you have an actor!" She's grandmother to  Isabel, Sophie and Noah Craig.

At 66, Diane Keaton is attractive enough to still be commanding top leading men,  i.e.  Keanu Reeves in Somethings Gotta Give (2003), she even had a nude scene in the picture! Her outlook on life is one of the things that makes her so beautiful... 'When I was younger I had these enormous vanities about what I expected from myself. I'm glad to have a comfortable and fascinating life, but now I see it for what it is, so I can be braver and more spontaneous and say to myself, "Oh, screw it, just go out there and do it."

Goldie Hawn (1945)... that makes her 67, I guess she's just never going to age! Did you know that Goldie.... is good friends with Sally Field? Or that she was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history? This is interesting...her father, Rut Hawn (aka Edward Rutledge Hawn), is descended from Edward Rutledge, the youngest person to sign the Declaration of Independence in 1776. She's Grandmother to 4 grandsons; Ryder Russell Robinson, from daughter Kate Hudson and ex-son-in-law Chris Robinson, Wilder Brooks Hudson, and Bodhi Hawn Hudson, from her son Oliver Hudson and daughter-in-law Erinn Bartlett, and Bingham Hawn Bellamy, from daughter Kate Hudson and future son-in-law Matthew Bellamy.

  1. Well, an early Happy Birthday to you! I am 64 and really enjoy the benefits of being a 'senior' citizen. Free soft drinks or tea at Wendy's, and their 'keychain' free Frosty. I think the worst thing about aging is def. health problems that now and again surface for me. Those few pounds are the next thing I'd nix if I could. I should be skinny as a stick....(in my opinion) but have a few extra pounds....from just LOOKING at desserts! Is it possible??? have a great day,....Maggie Ann

    1. I'm looking forward to the "perks" of being older... ie the discounts! So far I've stayed pretty healthy, thanks to good genes I think. I should move more, I am definately less flexible than I used to be. I'm convinced the pounds are here to stay, maybe dynamite would take some off me! Thanks for the birthday wishes!

  2. I'll wish you a very Happy Birthday now lest I forget to come back on Friday and do it. I'll be 62 this year. It really isn't so bad. I did have to laugh the other day when the girl at Taco Bell gave my husband the Senior Discount without even asking. Although he is some months younger than me he does have more gray hair - and boy, do I LOVE his gray hair. Think George Clooney's salt and pepper hair. Some have asked him why he doesn't color it. Parish the thought!

    1. I'm really nervous about my hair. My oldest daughter is going to add another color along with the light brown and then I just set back and let my silver join the party!

    1. Absolutely, age is something to be very grateful for. We have illness in our family right now that is threatening to end a life only half lived. Prayers sent up for Patricia in her fight against cancer would be much appreciated.

  4. Happy Birthday, be yourself, that's where your beauty lies. Here in the northwoods, I'm the oldest of the group we hang around with, including ATVing. My hair is grey. When we go to Lake Havasu, I'm one of the younger ones we hang out with... my hair is almost black. Its all in the perception of things. Again, Have a wonderful birthday!!

    1. The old saying hang out with friends that are older/grayer applies here! Since I go to two nursing homes weekly I guess I should feel pretty young!

  5. Welcome to the club! I've been a member for two months now, and it's pretty good! As for the stars - without the airbrush and professional makeup a lot of them are terribly thin and sinewy...not a good look off-camera.

    1. We're a body concious society, that's for sure. We can't seem to enjoy anything anymore without the sugar, salt or fat police threatening us. We eat real food at our house, just not so much that we oink!

    1. Too funny, we are both the same birth sign. All that sisterhood stuff and turns out we're just both Moon Children! Hope you had a very happy day!

  8. Joy, I too turned 60 this year. I can't believe it because I so do not feel what I thought 60 would feel like. I color my gray, have quite a few extra pounds, but I try not to let anything stop me from enjoying life to its fullest. I hang out with my kids, grandkids and their friends forgetting that I am not their age. I hope your birthday is filled with blessings and I love your blog partially because we are neigbors as in I'm in the River Valley.

    1. I can't even count all the blessings in my life. I've heard my Mom say many times she wishes she could roll the years back and re-live some parts. I like where I am right now! I so appreciate your kind words about what I write, we share much more than we intend to.

  11. I am 75 years old (and I loved my doctor when she said, but you are a young 75) so you will always be a sweet young thing to me!

  12. Happy 60th, I am not far behind. Having loads of money and a good photographer,(movie stars)can certainly keep the years at bay, looks-wise. Oh Well, I will try really hard to age gracefully, watch my hair turn silver and keep on truckin.
