Holy Pumpkins!

The dogwoods are turning that beautiful salmon color the past few days. We have them all around us in the woods and they are usually the first to color. The Oaks and Hickories, Poplars and Maples will be next in line. We've had a very wet summer in the Ozarks this year so we should have a colorful Fall, but it takes some cold weather for the sap to drop in the trees to really make them pop. It's raining here today so that will cause a major leaf drop. Hubby blows the leaves off into the deep ravine behind our house and mulches the leaves in the yard and flower beds. There's just to many to mulch them all. Along with leaves, their are acorns to contend with.

The squirrels and chipmunks are in Heaven and stay busy, storing and saving for Winter. I see them in hurried activity these days with full cheeks!

They are cute little things that I do love to watch but they can and do become a nuisance sometimes. They make a mess of the bird feeders. Very few "Squirrel Proof" feeders actually work. This time of year, I put pumpkins among the mums that are blooming in flower beds for my Halloween decoration.

The squirrels love to snack on them and start with a hole in the side or the top and slowly destroy the punkins! I just turn them to the "best side" and make do with holey pumpkins until Halloween is here!

  1. I am charmed by the squirrel in the pumpkin! How adorable!

Fall in South Alabama has not impressed me much. Pine trees and palm trees don't turn orange, yellow, or red.

    Have a great week!

  2. I want that little chipmunk so bad! Our trees are just starting to turn as we're so far down south, and even when they do, it's never as stunning as it is "up north."

  3. I'm so glad I found your blog. Simply delightful!
Last year I had holes in my pumpkins. I wondered what scary creature had done that. A squirrel? How funny! So that was it! You caught 'em red-handed!
Your recipes look great. I can't wait to read some of your other posts! Take care, Rebekah

  4. What a lovely post for a brisk fall day! We still have had no leaf drop. Our deciduous trees are still green. That's a bad sign. It means they'll all come down at once, usually on a day I'm expecting guests:-). Have a great day..

  7. I just can't feel any kindness toward squirrels. You got it right when you said they are a nuisance. We have had a problem with them getting into our attic. LBeau now has some traps set. I'm going to have to blog about them. Not for the squeemish.

  13. Well, that's a new one. I've never seen a squirrel dig in a pumpkin like that. We have about 10,000 in our yard in the fall. Cute, but they are pests.
