WayBack Machine

What if I told you I know where you can find the recipes of your childhood, the ones most near and dear to your heart? I'm not talking about Mom's meatloaf or Grammy's chocolate pie...I'm talking about the food that is forever in your deepest childhood memories...School Lunch Favorites! While reading posts on Facebook the other day, I came across a website for the USDA Recipes for Schools. There they were, for anyone who wanted to take a trip in the "Wayback Machine" to 1955's Ranger Cookies or 1959's Wacky Cake.

Alphabetical by recipe name, here are some of the one's I remember...
Peanut Butter Pie
Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies
Cafeteria Apple Crisp
Cafeteria Cole Slaw
Cafeteria Lady Rolls
Cafeteria Tapioca
Chili
School Pizza
Sweet Rolls
Glazed Peanut Butter Bars
Meat Loaf
Carrot Cake
Cherry Delight
Cafeteria Peanut Butter Candy
Old-Fashioned Peanut Butter Cookies
Peanut Butter Bars
Peanut Butter Fingers
Peanut Butter Fudge
Apple Crisp
No Bake Oatmeal Cookies
School Style Sloppy Joes
Tamale Pie
Toastie Dogs
Pizzaburger on Roll

You're going to have to use some of your math skills...the recipes are for 50 servings! I'm soooo glad I paid attention in Math class!

  1. We didn't have school lunches provided in the part of Australia that I hail from.

It looks like I missed out on some yummy stuff. I would probably have enjoyed school more if I could have looked forward to a Toastie Dog and Apple Crisp.

I remember a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a variety of fruit, provided by Grandma. We did have a fancy lunchbox though.

  5. Wow! You had way better food aka MEALS when you were in school than I did! Sigh..... Did you know that they consider french fries as a veggie now? They do! It's a potato you know! lol

  6. My mom was a lunch lady! There were a lot of things that they served at school that I liked. I remember my favorite lunch that made me feel better when I had "the cramps,"...orange drink and those rectangular pizzas.
    Hoosier hugs,
