Yes, I know it was you...

Rain, rain and more rain. I went out today in between storms to see how my tomato plants were doing. The whole row, a dozen tomato plants were gone...disappeared, kaput. The last time I checked on them they were about a foot tall and everyone of them had little tomatoes forming. I was thinking BLT's, homemade spaghetti sauce and all of the fresh sliced tomatoes we could eat. Now it's back to square one. Do I buy more tomato plants or do I get my gun and wait for the deer to arrive for the 7pm buffet???

  1. Hi Joycee, well wouldn't that just tick you off...all that work and waiting for nothing. So far we haven't lost any veggies to animals but we have a large dog that prowls the farm at night. It would have to be a desparate animal that would risk meeting up with our Shep. What about those sprinklers that go off from movement? I think I'd probably try to grow tomatoes again but I can certainly understand if you feel it's not worth it....there's always a Farmers Market. What ever your decision is...enjoy some good tomatoes. Have a wonderful weekend...Maura:)

  2. The Deer are hoping you will grow more tomatoes :)
I think Farmers Market is the way to go. I picked up some beautiful tasty tomatoes at the FM last Saturday. I cant wait to buy more tomorrow, along with homemade mozzarella, camembert, and pesto.
My husband suggested growing them in a cage.

  4. Oh, so you have hooved locusts in Arkansas, as well. Good luck, whatever you decide to do. The little buggers will just wait around until you put something (anything) out that they like. And they like just about everything.

  5. They aren't bothering my tomatoes but they feast on my beans every night! Little stinkers!

  6. Amazingly we haven't had any problem with deer yet...knock on wood...we are surrounded by woods. My main problem here is dealing with slugs and cucumber beetles. When we lived in town we had a beautiful garden that was seldom bothered by pest until one summer the "two legged pest" discovered our garden. We cured that problem by pitching a tent next to the garden and sleeping outside for the rest of the summer.

  8. I smiled when I read your post today. One time, I had planted about 50 impatiens, the bed under the trees looked so cute. A few weeks later, gone...down to the nubs. I couldn't be mad. I'm sure the deer loved them. It's just the way it is.

I like the farmer's market idea the best and then plant a (1) tomato plant in a pot on the porch or deck.

Still smiling from your story! N

  9. Such a bummer! Sometime deer are more like rodents, aren't they? Why do they have to look so pretty?

  10. That is such an aggravating feeling!! I've been there done that, except the critters were rabbits. I didn't put out any tomato plants for that reason this year. Bummer!!
