The first cold snap we had sent me searching to the back of the closet for my trusty flannel shirt that is my old friend. I love him, he became mine after a laundry accident rendered him useless to hubby. Shrunken from a large to a medium, he wasn't welcome on the other side of the closet. At first he felt hurt, unloved. His buddies, who he had hung out with laughed at him when they saw he was over on the "girl's side."
"Hey man, you looking kinda scrawny...did you fall into some hot water or somethin'?" Apparel can be so cruel!
He was ashamed to have lost his place on the rod with the big boys. No longer could he be considered one of the guys, pulled from the hanger on a regular basis...he was now looking at life from the gutter. Or at least that's what he thought.
The first time he went out with the Mrs. he got to see a different world. Up till then, he'd only seen the yard on days when Mr. raked leaves and ONCE he got to go to the hardware store. Living on the other side of the closet, he ran "errands." First the grocery store where he saw lots of other flannel shirts who smiled nicely at him and even a wink or two from some pink flannels that were hanging around the apple bin. Then onto the bookstore where he looked over the Mrs. shoulder at books about vacationing in far away lands. Finally they went through the drive through at Starbucks and the sweet girl at the window said "Where did you find that great shirt?" It made his day!
Since then, it's been a whirlwind of activity. He has became the Chosen One, the Mrs. wears him practically non-stop. He rarely gets a break, she wears him over a top when she's home. On cold days, he's invited on many trips to town. In and out of the washer, he barely gets hung up until he's going again. Now, on the rare occasions that he hangs across from his buds, he just smiles and tells them what he's been up to, they have a green with envy look on their plaid faces...
Good morning to you Joycee! I have a bag, filled with rice, to keep my feet warm in the winter that is just in that pattern of plaid -- I have an exta one somewhere, unfilled, that would go nicely with your shirt! I loved the line "apparel can be so cruel!" Very funny post to start my day out. E-mail me if you want the accessory to your shirt! Joni
ReplyDeleteAnd the best part about "hand me down" shirts is how worn, soft and wonderful they are!

Joyce...his brother lives here with me in the Hollow! My best friend gave it to me after she'd picked it up at Salvation Army for $2! Can you imagine? And it's an Abercrombie & Fitch no less!! I LOVE bargains!...:)JP

It is snowing again here in WV...or should I say "still" lol...and I decided I needed to come visit you! Thank you so much for the invitation...and for stopping by yesterday! I do enjoy company!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the kind words you left behind! I'm glad you enjoyed viewing the different blogs. It isn't really as hard to keep up with them as one would think. The recipe one I add to when I've tried a recipe that my hubby deems a keeper. Sometimes I remember to take pictures...sometimes I don't. But I do try to get one the next time I make the same recipe and add it. Ponderings of the Heart is just that...ponderings of my heart as I study the Word, so it isn't added to on a daily basis. The canning and freezing blog was basically started as a way for me to keep a running inventory from the harvest, but trust me...I got so busy canning that I didn't keep the tally going. That is something I will improve on this fall. Bits and Pieces is the first one...my go to place for every day life.
Thanks again for stopping by. Come again!
I love to wear my husband's shirts, either for a light jacket in early spring or fall weather or around the house on cold days. He's so hot-natured so he doesn't own any flannel, but his denim shirts are fun. He knows once he sees me wearing it, that it probably isn't going to live in HIS closet anymore. He's learned to adapt. LOL
ReplyDeleteI have two of those lucky shirts!
ReplyDeleteI wear one daily inside the house.
They are just W-M cheapies so aren't too heavy.
can't find my red shirt ~~ oh my, can I borrow yours.. LOL..
ReplyDeleteOhhhhh wait,, I come downstairs and hubby has it on,, over his shirt. He can't get it buttoned in front but he is wearing MY red shirt. he won't give it up ~ goodness to be..
Have a great day.ta ta for now from Iowa
I wish I had a friend of plaid shirt up here in New York with me. He'd be running around the city with me this winter.
ReplyDeleteI do believe I've got his kissin' cousin right here keepin' me warm down here on the Ponderosa!!! Ya just can beat a great flannel.
ReplyDeleteYou crack me up girl!!!'
God bless ya and have an amazin' weekend!!!
Those are the best! And my favorite is men sweaters at the thrift store. They barely wear the things and they are so wonderfully baggy and comfortable.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! very well written!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately Hubby wears all his clothes to death and then gets the collars turned so there is no chance I can get one...I've had my eyes on his lovely soft blue shirt for ages...I wonder if I can encourage it to come over to 'the girl's side'.
Thank you for dropping by my blog. Yes, moles are a nuisance. I've got the mole catcher coming again next week. As for deer...I think they must be worse than cows..but prettier! The entire cast of 'Watership Down' are bouncing around the garden at the moment as I type what a shame I don't eat rabbit pies.
Happy Sunday, Joycee!!! Funny how those knock around shirts wind up becoming the very best friends, EVER. I don't know what I would do without mine. Especially this winter...it's been a doozy.
ReplyDeleteNice to hear all is fine by you. I took a bit of a break from blogging. It sure is GREAT to be back!
Stay well, Louise
Joycee,
ReplyDeleteCute post! I have a blue plaid CPO type of jacket with padded, quilted lining and POCKETS! I love to wear it camping, and to take the dog out or to put on over my pajamas!
I love to snuggle in it! HUGS, Cheryl
Too funny. You have a way with words.
ReplyDeleteWell I cheated and bought my favorite flannels straight off the rack. Hubs won't wear them because they don't have snaps. Go figure! He doesn't know what he's missing.
