Mixed Marriage

We're all hunkered down , waiting for the first blast of winter. In this world there are two kinds of people...the ones who love the cold and and the ones who hate it. I'm in the first group, Hubby is in the second. I guess that makes us a mixed marriage, but it's somehow survived 40 winters so far.

Tonight it's supposed to be down in the 20's so I'm going to set the mood so that he won't complain. Maybe a pot of stew and homemade bread will keep him from grousing too much!

Here's a favorite recipe from the NFL Family Cookbook...
After the Game Beef Stew
Marty Schottenheimer -KC Chiefs
3 cups V-8 juice
6 T. tapioca
1tsp. salt
black pepper to taste
2 lb. steak, cubed
3 stalks celery, diced
5-6 peeled potatoes, diced
1 large onion chopped
4 carrots, diced
Preheat oven to 250. In a large bowl, combine he V-8, tapioca, salt and pepper. Put the steak and chopped vegetables into a dutch oven or crockpot. Pour the juice mixture over it all. Cover and bake the stew in the oven or crockpot for 5 hours.

  1. Joycee, I love the snow, hate the cold;Joe hates both. I just wolfed down a slice of homemade bread that Joe made with his chicken soup the other day! He cooks suppers most of the time. I clean...all the time...:) That doesn't sound right, does it???...:)JP

  2. I love that recipe.....such great comfort food!

  3. The tapioca is an interesting addition to the recipe - I'll have to try that one!

  4. When we first started dating, one of the first things Doug asked me was how I slept. I said "How do I sleep?" not quite knowing what he meant. He said "like what temperature in the winter?" I said "Oh, I turn the heat down very low and wear a hooded sweatshirt or a hat." He said "Perfect! I do too!" Of course now when I get a hot flash I'm throwing off the blankets, then waking up freezing!
    Stay warm! Hoosier hugs, Cheryl

  5. I have never head of tapioca in a stew - must give it a go.

  6. We just polished off our stew that I made a few days ago. We love soups in cold weather.

I am sitting here listening to the winds. The temperature is 18° and DH says we have a half inch of snow!

    Glad I milked yesterday!
