I'm hoping Santa will bring us some new furniture for Christmas! Last weekend, Hubby and I went to a huge new store that's just opened here. Hundreds of sofas and loveseats, sectionals and chairs but nothing that remotely appealed to us. We've had the same sofa and loveseat for 15 years now, a really great leather that has held up for a long time. But it's beginning to go from the desired "weathered" look to OLD. There is a fine line there! But like everything else in my life, I have trouble letting go. The places that I always set are molded to me, they are my comfort zone. I'll have to re-mold a new one...how long will that take?
Then there's the cost of a new set. I nearly fainted when I saw how much they cost now. How can something that you set on cost the same as a good used car. Heck, that's what we paid for the first new car we ever bought! I can remember crying when I realized we had just spent $3,000 for that 1976 Ford Pinto, how could we have been so frivolous?
Pinching pennies is a habit and a lifestyle. I buy on sale, I get off brands and we make do. Years of being careful (I can just hear my Dad's words..."The Poor House is just around the corner!") makes big purchases hard to do.
Today I'm going over to Fayetteville to take my Mother-in-law for her doctor's check up and I may go in Ashley's Furniture Store. They had an ad and I'm just going to look....
...unless I set down and love it!
Here's hoping Santa is good to you this year, Joycee. I hope you are 'well set' by New Year's!

Our Fathers may have been long-lost brothers! My Dad's famous line, ALL my life, has been, "Save for a Rainy Day". My parents would purchase the 'best' they could afford and then take the best darn care of it possible and it would basicially last, oh, at least 15 years! Good luck ... Ashley Furniture is BEAUTIFUL!
ReplyDeleteI hate shopping for furniture because like you I keep it forever! I hope just the right one steps up and shouts....sit down:)Be sure to take a pictures of the before and after in your world.

Definitely go to Ashley! I decorated a clubhouse for 400 condos and used their sofas and they have held up so well. I hate waiting for 5 weeks, but their prices are amazing. Have fun. I think furniture is the most fun thing to buy, better than shoes, purses, jewelry or clothes!
ReplyDeleteYa but what would a new Ford cost today? Everything is relative.
ReplyDeleteI've always pinched pennies. It's hard for me to plunk down any money for anything that's not on sale.
ReplyDeleteGood luck in your search! It took me 3 1/2 years to figure out what I wanted and another 2 years to pick out a color! My last sofa and loveseat was about 12 years old and "lived through" 2 teenages, 3 dogs and a husband so it was really time to get a new one!

Great Christmas look here! Good luck shopping!
ReplyDeleteSo expensive!! I've been pricing too, and I'm afraid I am going to have to hang on to what I've got for a couple more years! Hope you find something delightful at Ashley!!
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm a lefty too and a penny pincher. Speaking of penny pinching, I'm holding a giveaway on my blog for Orglamix Organic makeup and you're welcome to come by and enter. http://sweet-as-sugar-cookies.blogspot.com/2010/12/orglamix-organic-mineral-makeup-review.html
ReplyDeletecolleen-ashley's upholstery is not known for it;s quaility....you sure won't get fifteen yrs. out of it ... for endurance look at flexsteel they finally have beautiful fabrics to match their indestructible frames!!! Rowe, furnitire is also hearty....the big boys like Henredon, century, sherrill, etc.....are super expensive but they last 4ever...try a Hanks and More with emphasis on the more that means they have Thomasville, Berhardt and schnaldig.....here's what you ask...Hardwood frame? eight-way hand tied? you want cushions that are foam and then wrapped to get that highend look...the deals are out there...dicker!! remember they should be priced at least 20%off the MSRP to start with ...Bassett has really changed since they hired Lee (big designer) look in Fayt or Rogers if you find something you like I know a lesscostly place to buy Basset close by....hope this helps.....love ya
