Pickers my Pick

Monday nights at 8PM Central time we are glued to the History Channel's new show American Pickers! It's two antique dealers who take to the road on the most hilarous hunts for treasure that you can imagine. This isn't your Grandma's antiquing though, looking through flea markets for silver and china.

Pickers Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz are on a mission to recycle America, diving into piles of grimy junk or getting chased off by gun-wielding homeowners. They hit the back roads from coast to coast, searching for trash that can become another's treasure. They scour junkyards, basements, garages and barns, meeting odd-ball characters and hearing their amazing stories.
The people they meet along the way, the savers, are a part of Americana. Last week's show had them driving down a rural Iowa road when they pass by an old farm. A quick turn around and they are at the door asking the old gentleman if he might have some things to sell. He says he just might have a "few" things! The trip to the barn yeilded a saddle that he had once used on the farm, bought for $75 the pickers were able to refurbish and sell to a collector for $500. The bicycle was bought for $20 and sold to a California decorator for $2000.

Some people love what they do for a living, these guys were made for this! They are making a living telling the history of America one piece at a time!

  2. WOW...I KNOW THERE IS A LOT OF STUFF OUT THERE...TOO BAD THEY DON'T GIVE MORE TO THE FARMER OR GUY THEY BUY IT FROM CAUSE I KNOW THEY MAKE A HUGE PROFIT. ONCE I SOLD ONE OF THOSE REAL SMALL MILK CANS TO A LADY AT OUR YARD SALE, LATER I SAW IT AT "HER" ANTIQUE STORE FOR 5 TIMES WHAT SHE BOUGHT IT FROM ME...THAT MADE ME MAD! HAVE A GOOD DAY AND COME SAY HI :D

  3. Hi Joycee, thank you for visiting my blog this morning. I wonder if your granny's recipe is like mine. This is a delicious pie if you like raisins. Once in a restaurant my sister's (four sisters) and I saw sour cream raisin pie and we got sooo excited. When it came we all sighed in unison. The waitress asked us, "What's wrong?" It had meringue on the top, so we knew it was not our grandma's recipe. It couldn't hold a candle to our raisin pie.

I love your post this morning. Imagine the fun in the 'hunt.' Kind of like that TV show. I love watching that. Are they still on??

    Have a happy day.
    Hugs, Jeanne

  4. Thanks for letting us know about the show it looks great! Have been reading you for a couple of weeks now, I really enjoy your outlook, the world is really a small place. We moved to TX from IA in 1982 and interviewed in Rogers in the late 80's with Stitt, they didn't understand why we wanted to leave TX and take a huge pay cut, (we wanted to be closer to family). We are still in TX 26 years later and still dreaming of moving to Arkansas someday. Thanks for taking the time to share you life.
