Enough

We spent a lot of time on the lake when I was growing up, maybe that's why I love it so much now. We'd head out early, and I mean dark-thirty! That's sometime between the wee hours of 4 and 5AM, it was imperative we get on the lake right as the sun came up. I'm not sure if that was when the fish woke up for breakfast or it was a positioning  ploy to get to the best fishing spots... whatever, we rolled out of bed and into the car to make the hour trip down to Lake Taneycomo. My Dad would have provisions packed for the day~ Spam or bologna, bread and crackers, rat cheese(what Mom called cheddar)! The big tackle box held the rest of the necessities of the day. Whatever came up, we were prepared.

Sometimes we'd catch so many that Daddy would give away the extras to lucky neighbors. But many times, we'd bring home only a stringer of two or three. It was the luck of the draw, the planets had to be all lined up, the weather had to cooperate and the fish... well, sometimes they just weren't hungry.

I never heard my Dad complain. For him, just being on the lake was enough.

  1. My Daddy loves fishing and sitting on the bank waiting. Grew up fishing and camping and kind of miss that too. We try to get him to our cabin as much as possible to let him enjoy the creek! I love that fish picture.

  2. OMGosh Joy, sounds just like my childhood. My dad loved fishing and we went no matter what time of year it was. And early. He said if we didn't catch a lot of fish that we "weren't holding our mouths right". Funny. I haven't been fishing in years but intend on teaching my grandsons to fish to carry on the legacy my dad left us.

    1. We did too, even in the "blue cold" as Mom called it! I've heard that expression many times... hold your mouth right!

  3. Oh dear, "RAT cheese", as cheddar?! I only went fishing once in my life, and I caught 11 Rocky Mountain Trout! Then, I never fished again. What a lovely memory you have of times on the lake.

    1. Rat cheese... not a great way to describe Cheddar, but it was the one they baited traps with on the farm! I can't eat Cheddar without thinking of it as Rat cheese!!! I love the lake, in fact I love any body of water no matter how small or large.

  4. I too have memories of Lake Taneycomo & my Dad fishing. However, we would usually be camping & Mom & I would stay at the campground while Dad & my brother went fishing early in the morning. We also fished a lot at Bennett Springs & Roaring River State Park. Good memories!

    1. Too cool that we've walked the same paths, more than likely! We went back to Roaring River State Park this summer and I blogged about it, so pretty!

    1. True, no matter whether you catch anything or not, it's being out in nature that takes away all the stresses of life.
